Desloratadine is a second generation, tricyclic antihistamine which has a selective and peripheral H1-antagonist action. It is the active descarboethoxy metabolite of Loratadine second generation histamine.
Absorption: well absorbed from the gut and reaches highest blood plasma concentrations after about 3 hours.
Protein binding: 83 to 87%
Half life: 27 hours
Metabolism: extensively metabolized to 3-hydroxydesloratadine, an active metabolite, which is subsequently glucuronidated.
Excretion: approximately 87% of a 14C-desloratadine dose was equally recovered in urine and feces.
Deslo-ODT blocks H1 receptor (GI tract, uterus, large blood vessels, and bronchial smooth muscle) and blocks the action of endogenous histamine
Leads to temporary relief of the negative symptoms (e.g. nasal congestion, watery eyes) brought on by histamine.
